A Mother’s Prayer for her Child (How to Pray for Your Children)
One of the best things we can do for our children is pray for them. As Christian mothers, we desire the best for our children. We do all we can for them. For whatever reason, God chooses to make a mother’s prayer one of the strongest forces in a child’s life. Today I want to encourage you to pray for your children.
A Prayer for Your Children
Prayer should come from the heart, but if you don’t know where to start, here is a simple daily prayer you can pray for your child/children.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the blessing You have given me in these children. Help me to be the mother I need to be for them today. Bless my children’s hearts with a desire to serve You. May they be kind, loving, and strong in the Lord. Protect them from harm and evil. In Jesus’ name, Amen
More Things You Can Pray for Your Children
God’s Help for Difficult Times
Raising our children comes with lots of challenges. We just can’t raise them right without God’s help. It won’t always be easy either.
Perhaps you or your child is going through some hard times. Maybe everything looks bleak right now. Never underestimate how powerful prayers can be. God can use any situation and turn it around for good. While our mother’s love for our children hates to see them go through hard times, we can rest in God’s care. He loves our children and will see them through these trials.
Maybe you are having to deal with difficult children, or simply going through a rough patch in your child training. Ask God for wisdom in whatever situation you face. Even if you just don’t know what to do next, you can still be a praying mom. In fact, that is probably the best thing you could do anyway.
One of our children is going through a hard time with controlling her emotions. Many times a day she gets very upset just for simple things like her doll blanket not looking exactly how she wants it to. It can be wearying for us as parents, but I am also trusting that she will grow up and that God is giving us wisdom and a heart of love.
Physical Health
When my dear son was born, we nearly lost him. (You can read more about his birth and my daughter’s prayer for him.) I think of all the times my children prayed that God would keep the baby alive, and we are so grateful He chose to give us this gift, and that we now have a healthy baby boy.
It pulls on our maternal heart to see our children sick. We can pray for them and then leave them in God’s hands. Sometimes with sick children, our own needs get buried because of our selfless love for our children. Ask God to give you the strength and good health you need too to care for them well.
Their Relationships
With God
Jesus Christ made a way for us and our children to have a direct relationship with God. We can ask Him to give our children the fear of the Lord and a deep love for the Word of God. We can point them in the right direction, but we can’t force them to allow Him to be their Lord God. We can ask the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth.
With You
I have three daughters and am a daughter myself, so the mother-daughter relationship is close to my heart. As new mothers with our tiny babies, we can’t imagine ever struggling in our relationships with our children. But as they get older, there will most likely be difficult days where our “unconditional love” gets tested. Seek to be a friend with your young children, and rely on God for wisdom when you face some bumps in the road.
For now, it is easy to always get along with my son as he is just a baby, but I expect we will at some stage of life have to work a bit harder on our relationship. May God help us to be a good mother and friend for our children.
Godly Friends
The prayer for good friends for my children has been in my heart for many years. We live in a community where my children don’t really have many good friends. But I have seen God answer prayers for friends for them, even if it looks different than what I wish it did. I will continue to pray, and I know God will make a way.
Future Marriage Partner
I remember my dear mother often praying for our future spouses, and I have been blessed with a good husband. I want to remember to pray more often for my children’s future spouses, and that God would prepare them now already.
Adult Children
Pray for your children’s lives even when they are no longer under your roof. Maybe they have made some wrong choices and it leaves you with an aching heart. Keep praying. God loves them and is working to bring them back to Himself.
Save it for Later.
The Prayer Life of a Godly Mother
I have read of many mothers like Hudson Taylor’s mom who spent hours praying for her son. Through her prayers for his life, many people came to know Jesus. In our homes, on our knees, we can be part of the force that changes the world. You can read about her and other inspiring Godly mothers here.
Last night as I checked up on my precious children in their beds, I was thinking about the power of prayer. A silent prayer rose in my heart. “Dear God, please help me to be the mom I need to be.” It’s a prayer that is on my heart a lot.
May we learn to be mothers with the heart of Jesus, who pray much for our children and our husbands. Start your days with prayer, and learn from other praying moms. Also pray for and support other new moms or grieving mothers. May our Father God bless you with godly wisdom and a humble heart as you seek to leave your children in His loving arms. After all, He loves them much more than we do.
