This delicious, soft, white bread is simple enough for beginners to make.
Prep Time 2 hours 30 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups water
  • 2 cups milk or buttermilk hot
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp yeast
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour optional
  • 10 cups flour approximately

Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 large mixing spoon
  • 6 breadpans
  • 1 breadknife optional

Method

  1. Get out your mixing bowl, spoon, and ingredients.
  2. Add the hot water, milk, and shortening. Make sure the shortening is melted if using lard, and that the liquid mix is warm to the touch.
  3. Add yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix a bit.
  4. Add flour (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup at a time), mixing with your spoon as long as possible.
  5. Once you can't mix with the spoon clean it off. Keep kneeding and adding flour as needed till the dough is no longer sticky.
  6. Cover the dough and let rise for an hour.
  7. Punch down the dough which should have about doubled in size, and then form it into loaves. This recipe is for about 6 regular bread pans.
  8. Poke the newly formed loaves with a fork to take out any air bubbles, and then cover and let rise another hour or so till doubled or more.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350* Farenheit, and bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes.
  10. Let the loaves cool, slice them, and enjoy or stick in the freezer for a later date.
