Simple Homemade White Sandwich Bread for Beginners
Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh homemade bread? At our house we do! I have been making regular yeast sandwich bread since I was about 10 years old, and today I want to share the recipe with you.
This bread recipe is perfect for beginners as it is simple and easy once you know how to make it. If you want to see more of exactly how I do it all, the video shows how I mix it, knead it, and form the loaves.
What You Need
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients you need to make this delicious, soft bread. You should be able to get all of them at your regular grocery store. As I live in Costa Rica, it doesn’t make sense to tell you where I get mine!

Keep in mind that my recipe is quite large, like for six regular bread pans, but you can easily divide it in half or thirds.
- 2.5 cups water
- 2 cups milk or buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 5 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (optional)
- White flour
The whole wheat flour is optional. You can make it with just white flour. I am not sure how much I use as I just keep adding flour till it feels right and doesn’t stick. My guess is that I use about 10 cups of flour.

Equipment

To make homemade bread, you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment. I also know there are things like bread machines that do some of the work for you, but I have never used one. If you want to start there, then I am sure you could find good resources somewhere for bread machines.

An electric bread knife is also optional, as you can use a regular bread knife. I love my electric knife though to make nice straight cuts as the bread is soft. A wooden spoon is also optional, but it feels so much better than a metal mixing spoon.

I have no way of linking directly to the bowls, pans, utensils, or bread knife I use, as most of them were given to me as wedding gifts nearly 10 years ago. But you should still be able to find one in the link that works for you.

How to Make the Bread
- Get out your mixing bowl, spoon, and ingredients.
- Add the hot water, milk, and shortening. Make sure the shortening is melted if using lard, and that the liquid mix is warm to the touch.
- Add yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix a bit.
- Add flour (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup at a time), mixing with your spoon as long as possible.
- Once you can’t mix with the spoon, clean it off. Keep kneading and adding flour as needed till the dough is no longer sticky.
- Cover the dough and let it rise for an hour.
- Punch down the dough, which should have about doubled in size, and then form it into loaves. This recipe is for about 6 regular bread pans.
- Poke the newly formed loaves with a fork to take out any air bubbles, and then cover and let rise another hour or so till doubled or more.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F, and bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes.
- Let the loaves cool, slice them, and enjoy or stick them in the freezer for later.

Again, if any of this seems confusing, if you are a beginner bread maker, please ask a question below. As I mentioned, I have been doing this since I was 10 years old, and it’s like second nature to me. So maybe I don’t explain it well enough. You can also watch the video above for more of an idea of how to do it all.
