The Importance of Music

Music, whether sung or instrumental, has so much beauty and variety for us to enjoy. I myself was never very musically gifted, nor did I have the opportunity to learn instruments in my younger years.

For that reason I am putting quite a bit of importance on music in our homeschooling journey. It’s not that my children need to become professional musicians or singers, but in their elementary years I am laying a strong foundation so if they desire they can go much further than I ever will.

I have found several resources we are loving, and I am learning a lot alongside them, making this the perfect beginner “program” even for parents who have no musical knowledge and need to start from the very basics.

Best of all, most of these resources are very reasonably priced or even free, and you don’t need to be rushing out of the house for piano lessons and such. They can be professionally taught and learned from the comfort of your own home.

Singing

One of the best things to learn in the world of music is singing. You can do it for free! Even though some people have more talent than others, everyone can learn to sing.

The best thing to teach your children to sing is to sing often yourself. It doesn’t matter if you or they can’t sing perfectly. The more you sing, the better you get at it. Sing the best you can, and you will see your children learning more and more about singing.

If you don’t feel very confident and want some more help learning to sing, we have enjoyed learning some through the Singing Made Easy courses. We have just worked with Level 1 so far, but there are five different levels that advance more and more in singing abilities and I hope to go through them all with time.

You can even check out a free lesson to see if this is what you are looking for.

Singing Made Easy comes from the website Music in our Homeschool where they have a lot of different music courses that I haven’t used. I am sure they are good as well, but I just haven’t tried them all out yet.

We have started to use the Recorder course and the Guitar course from there too. So far we enjoy them and I hope to report back when we have learned more from them. You may find something there that would help you in teaching your children.

We sing lots of hymns and are working on memorizing them as I think that is very important for our homeschool as well.

Piano Lessons

I really wanted my children to learn piano lessons. It is one of the most helpful instruments for visualizing music that exists, and we have one of the electric ones.

The problem was that I had no idea where to find piano lessons around here, and much less how to find the time and resources necessary to take my children somewhere. How exciting it was to find out about Hoffman Academy!

Those lessons by Joseph Hoffman are exactly what I wish I had had when I was younger. They start at the most basic concepts and gradually get more and more advanced. I am amazed at how much and how fast my girls are learning. While I still know everything that they are doing, I am doing the lessons with them and enjoying it a lot.

The lessons are also engaging and lots of fun. The girls enjoy having a teacher that makes them laugh. At the end of each lesson he has a small finger puppet show. They call it their “prize” and always look forward to it.

Best of all, the lessons are available for free, which is what we needed at this stage of life. It’s an answer to an unspoken prayer for piano lessons for my girls when we couldn’t have afforded paid lessons.

That said, there is a paid version of the course that includes all kinds of bonuses that I hope we get to use someday. For all your piano needs, be sure to check out Hoffman Academy!

Music Theory

Learning music theory has always been very important to me. It’s probably because I have never really developed an ear for music, so I need to be able to see what is happening. For that reason I was really happy to discover the Theory Time Workbooks.

There is a workbook for each grade. So far I have only used the first-grade book for my daughter, but I plan to continue using them for future grades.

These workbooks are very thorough and teach music theory so that you can learn to read music on songsheets. Having a piano is helpful but not necessary. It also has some ear training exercises, but if you don’t have a piano there are free videos online that cover that part of the course.

You can get them on Amazon and directly on the Theory Time Website. Highly recommended!

Music Appreciation

Maybe you are simply looking for something to teach your children music appreciation. Maybe you just want them to listen to pieces of music and enjoy them just for what they are. While I haven’t done this much yet, I am trying to think of where I could fit it in.

I have found what I would use though, especially because it is free and very easy to use. Under The Home has free music appreciation for the elementary grades (as well as all the other subjects for a complete curriculum, all free).

There is a different piece of music and activities to go with it for each week. While it’s divided by grades, I think all of it works for any grade level.) It seems so simple, I just need to fit it in!

Other Music Opportunities

For now that is all we are covering in our house music wise. We do own a guitar and a recorder, and one of my daughters dreams of a violin so hopefully we get one eventually.

I would love to find good, reasonably priced or even free, courses for these instruments that would be as beginner friendly as the Piano course since I have no idea how to use those instruments. If you know of a course that fits the description, please let me know!

If I find more that I can recommend in the future, I will be sure to add it here.
